Kids’ Valley Garden was planted in Eastern Ontario, but there is no single “Eastern Ontario climate.” A garden near the Ottawa River, one beside Lake Ontario, and one on a windy rural hill can behave differently—even when a map gives them the same label.
What a hardiness zone can tell you
A plant hardiness zone is a clue about which perennial trees, shrubs, and flowers are likely to survive winter. Canada’s system is not the same as the USDA system: the Canadian map combines seven climate clues, including winter cold, frost-free days, summer rainfall, snow, and wind.
Natural Resources Canada released an updated map using 1991–2020 conditions in 2025. Because Eastern Ontario crosses several zones, use the current Canadian hardiness map to look up your municipality or exact location instead of copying a zone from a neighbour, an old book, or a U.S. seed catalogue.
Zones are mainly for winter survival of perennials. They do not tell you the best day to sow carrots or set out tomatoes. For annual vegetables and flowers, also use your local frost history, a current forecast, soil temperature, the seed packet, and observations from your own garden.

A microclimate is a small place with conditions different from the area around it. A south-facing brick wall may stay warm; a hollow may collect cold air; a fence may block wind; pavement may shed water into one bed while a tree keeps another dry.

Climate change: more than “warmer”
Canada’s growing season has already lengthened, and Natural Resources Canada projects that much of the country could gain roughly 20 to 40 growing-season days by late this century if emissions continue to rise. That may create new planting opportunities, but a longer season is not automatically an easier one.
Eastern Ontario gardeners should be ready for a changing mix of conditions:
- Longer, warmer seasons may let some plants grow or flower for more days.
- Extreme heat and dry spells can stress plants, dry soil faster, and increase the need for shade, mulch, and careful watering.
- Heavy rain and flooding can wash soil, waterlog roots, and arrive even during an otherwise dry season.
- Warmer winters and early spring warmth can shift bloom and insect timing; tender new growth can still be hurt by a later cold snap.
- Pests, diseases, and unfamiliar species may appear at different times or survive winters that once limited them.
These are long-term patterns, not a prediction for Tuesday. Weather still jumps around from day to day and year to year.
Grow a garden that can adapt
- Cover soil with suitable mulch and add compost to help it hold moisture while still draining.
- Group plants by water needs, water the soil rather than the leaves, and check moisture before watering.
- Grow a mix of plants and include flowers across the season for pollinators.
- Give heat-sensitive plants afternoon shade and keep rain where it can soak in safely.
- Choose regionally suitable plants, but treat a warmer zone map as one clue—not permission to ignore sudden cold.
- Record frost, heat, rain, bloom, pests, and harvest in a garden journal. Your notes make climate change local and visible.
The most useful question is not “What did gardeners always do here?” but “What is this garden showing us now?”
