Lilac Varieties
There are hundreds of lilac varieties, but most nurseries carry only a few well-known and hardy types suitable for their region. You can narrow down your choices by deciding on the color you want to plant.
Here are some popular lilac varieties:
- Syringa vulgaris 'Sensation': Deep purple flowers with white edges. Grows 10-12 feet (3-3.7 meters) tall and 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters) wide.
- Syringa vulgaris 'Krasavitsa Moskvy': Light pink to white flowers. Grows 10-12 feet (3-3.7 meters) tall and 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters) wide.
- Syringa x hyacinthiflora 'Pocahontas': Deep violet flowers. Grows 8-10 feet (2.4-3 meters) tall and 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters) wide.
- Syringa x prestoniae 'Donald Wyman': Lavender-pink flowers. Grows 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters) tall and 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters) wide.
Most lilac varieties bloom for about two weeks in late spring. They require well-draining soil and full sun exposure. Plant lilacs at least 6 feet (1.8 meters) apart to provide enough space for growth. Prune them right after they bloom to encourage new growth and better flowering the following year.
