Trench Composting
- Trench composting is an effective method of composting because it doesn't take up any space in a small garden and it doesn't need turning over with a garden fork.
- It makes a good moisture reservoir that is especially effective where there is sandy soil.
- Dig either a hole or trench about 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 1m) deep and put the soil you remove to one side.
- Fill the hole with organic material like hay, leaves, weeds, garden refuse or compost.
- Cover it with 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) of the soil taken from the hole.
- This will help the organic matter break down and the nutrients will go back into the soil, enriching it for your plants.
